With the counting of tigers for the first time in West Bengal, large herbivores will be counted

For the first time in the census of tigers in Kolkata, large herbivores like deer, elephant will be counted. The tiger census is to be held in Kolkata this year. This will be the first time that along with tigers, other large herbivores will also be counted. The Chief Forest Officer gave this information on Wednesday.

Earlier only tigers were counted

Chief Wildlife Warden Debal Roy said that earlier the tiger count was done keeping in mind only big cats, but from this year the number of large herbivores will be included in the calculation determined by the All India Coordinated Tiger Census.

He told that it is also important for the habitat of herbivores to live in the ecosystem where tigers live. Therefore, it is important to know how many other herbivores live with tigers inside the forest area.

Vanjeev Warden Debal Roy told that the deer, gaur, rhinoceros and elephants will be counted on the basis of the area.

Counting of tigers can be done in December-January

Describing the tiger population of 2019-20, Roy said that there were 95 tigers in the Sundarbans at that time. He has expressed hope that the work of counting of tigers will start in December this year and it will continue till January. He also said that this year will also see a jump in the number of tigers.

Chief Wildlife Warden Roy said that apart from camera trapping techniques, other statistical models would be used to arrive at the most probable figures and the lowest possible figures.

After the tiger census, the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) will study the entire data.

He said that this tiger census will cover Sundarbans National Park, Buxa Tiger Reserve, Gorumara National Park, Jaldapara National Park and Chhapramari National Park.
