Raipur: A court in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district has sentenced a 33-year-old sanitation worker to life imprisonment for raping three girls in a private school. The court also convicted the school’s head teacher Daniel Varghese, another employee Sajan Thomas and two female teachers Pratibha Holkar and Sundari Nayak in the case for failing to take prompt action in the incidents of sexual abuse.
Durg district government advocate Balmukund Chandrakar said on Tuesday that on Monday, the court of Additional Sessions Judge Dr Mamta Bhojwani convicted the main accused S Sunil and four others in the sexual abuse case of four to five-year-old girls. Chandrakar said that the court has sentenced Sunil to life imprisonment under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code for raping a girl child.
School administration accused of not taking action against the victim’s father
The advocate said that on February 25, 2016, the father of a girl had lodged a complaint with the Bhilai Nagar police station in the district that her daughter was sexually abused by Sunil, a sanitation worker in a school located in Sector-6 of the city. The girl was a nursery student in the school during the incident.
He said that during the complaint, the girl’s father had also lodged a case against Varghese, nursery section in-charge Holkar and Thomas. The girl’s father had alleged that he had not taken any action when he reached the school with a complaint.
The families of the girls had also filed a case against Holkar.
Chandrakar said that after this, the family members of two other girls had also filed a case of sexual harassment with their daughters in the school. The families of both the girls had also filed a case against Holkar. Chandrakar said that the court has sentenced Holkar to six months’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 each in all three cases. On the other hand, Nayak and Thomas have been sentenced to six months rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 in the case related to them.
The government advocate said that the court has sentenced Varghese, the headmaster of the school, to one year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000 in this case. Chandrakar said that the head teacher and staff of the school have been convicted under Section 202 of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
