New Delhi: There has been a political uproar to increase the BSF’s jurisdiction on the Pakistan border to 50 km. The Punjab government has strongly objected to this provision of the Home Ministry. The BSF can now conduct raids and seizures to catch drugs within a radius of 50 km from the border, earlier this range was limited to only 15 km.
However, BSF used to get it done only within a radius of 100 meters. Congress leaders of Punjab are raising questions due to the increase in the jurisdiction of BSF. It is being linked to the interference of the Center in the jurisdiction of the states. The Ministry of Home Affairs has reduced the border authority of BSF in some state and increased it in some, all the ruckus is hidden in increasing this reduction.
Channi said – I strongly condemn the unilateral decision
The Punjab government has strongly objected to this provision of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi tweeted, “Additional powers have been given to BSF within 50 km radius along international borders, strongly condemn this unilateral decision of the Government of India, this is a direct attack on the federal structure. I am the Union Home Minister. I urge you to immediately withdraw this irrational decision of Amit Shah.”
Punjab Home Minister said – Appeal to PM, do not accept it
Punjab Home Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said that the Center gave the area up to Amritsar, Batala and Amritsar to the BSF. There is an appeal to the Prime Minister, it should not be accepted. Attention BSF Drones. We do not understand what the central government wants to do. Punjab Police has fought terrorism, can’t it fight drugs? Why is the Center looking at Punjabis with suspicion?
He said that this is a direct attack on the federal structure. We are writing a letter to Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah as well as seeking time to meet both of them. Seal the border, control the BSF on no man’s land and not come under the JD of Punjab Police to investigate.
Randhawa said – imposing President’s rule in Punjab is not so easy
Randhawa said that the area of BSF has been reduced in Gujarat, the area is lying vacant there, but in Punjab there is a population and cities on the border. The Center wants to take some action against Punjab, so such tactics are being adopted. Imposing President’s rule in Punjab is not so easy, we appeal to the Prime Minister with folded hands, do not try to spoil the brotherhood of Punjab.
Protest from Bengal, said – two evil minds are misusing the agencies
The Center has been targeted against this decision from Bengal as well. TMC vice-president Yashwant Sinha tweeted, “Two evil minds sitting in Delhi were running power by misusing agencies like ED, Income Tax, CBI, NIA, Norcotics Bureau, now they have also included BSF in this list. has done. (Now) federalism goes to hell.”
BSF’s jurisdiction has increased in Punjab, Bengal, Assam
The Central Government has amended the Border Security Force (BSF) Act to give it the power to search, seize and arrest in a large area of 50 km from the present 15 km of the International Border in Punjab, West Bengal and Assam. At the same time, in the areas of Gujarat bordering Pakistan, this radius has been reduced from 80 km to 50 km and in Rajasthan there has been no change in the area limit up to 50 km.
Full control of BSF in these states
“This will enhance the operational capability of the force in preventing cross-border crimes and offenses up to a radius of 50 km in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, West Bengal and Assam,” the BSF said in a statement. The new amendment will empower the force to apprehend any person who has committed an offense under these laws. Border Security Forces will continue to exercise these powers in Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya and “the entire region” in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
