BSF in West Bengal, Punjab and Assam: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has expanded the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF). Now BSF officers have got permission for search, arrest and seizure in areas up to 50 km from the country’s border in West Bengal, Punjab and Assam. In such a situation, there has been a political ruckus on increasing the jurisdiction of BSF on the Pakistan border to 50 km.
The Punjab government has strongly objected to this provision of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi tweeted, “Additional powers have been given to BSF within 50 km radius along international borders, strongly condemn this unilateral decision of the Government of India, this is a direct attack on the federal structure. I am the Union Home Minister. I urge you to immediately withdraw this irrational decision of Amit Shah.”
I strongly condemn the GoI’s unilateral decision to give additional powers to BSF within 50 KM belt running along the international borders, which is a direct attack on the federalism. I urge the Union Home Minister @AmitShah to immediately rollback this irrational decision.

Let us inform that BSF can now conduct raids and seizures to catch drugs within a radius of 50 km from the border. Earlier this range was limited to only 15 kms. However, the BSF used to act only within a radius of 100 meters. Congress leaders of Punjab are raising questions due to the increase in the jurisdiction of BSF. It is being linked to the interference of the Center in the jurisdiction of the states.
At the same time, senior Congress leader and MP Manish Tewari tweeted on this decision of the Ministry of Home Affairs, “In such a situation, half of Punjab will now come under the jurisdiction of BSF, Charanjit Singh should oppose it.”
Punjab Home Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said, “The Center has given the area up to Amritsar, Batala and Amritsar to BSF. Appeal to PM Modi not to accept it. BSF should focus on drones. What the central government wants to do, we have to So I don’t understand. Punjab Police has fought terrorism, can’t it fight drugs? Why is the Center looking at Punjabis with suspicion? There is a direct blow to the federal structure.”
He further said, “We are writing a letter to PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Also seeking time to meet both of them. Seal the border, control the BSF on No Man’s Land and not in the JD of Punjab Police. To come and investigate. The area of BSF has been reduced in Gujarat. There the area is lying vacant, but in Punjab, there is a population on the border, there are cities. The Center wants to take any action against Punjab, so such tactics are being adopted. Punjab It is not so easy to impose President’s rule in India. We appeal to the PM with folded hands that do not try to spoil the brotherhood of Punjab.
