New Variant in South America: On one hand, while the speed of corona virus infection has decreased in the country, on the other hand, another variant of corona virus has been found in South Africa. After the appearance of this variant, the government of South Africa, in collaboration with private laboratories, is extensively researching people infected with this variant. At the same time, officials said on Thursday that the World Health Organization (WHO) will hold a special meeting amid concerns about a new covid-19 variant found in South Africa.
“Our technical advisory group on the evolution of the virus is discussing this with our colleagues in South Africa,” Maria Van Kerkhove, COVID-19 technical lead for the WHO, said during a livestream Q&A session on Thursday.
He said that tomorrow we are meeting in view of this new variant of the virus. He said, “We are convening a special meeting to discuss this, we will sit with many scientists in the meeting and talk about the new variant. In the meeting, we will try to know what the new variant means. ?”
Need to know more about the new variant
He said officials are aware that the new version, known as B.1.1.529, has a lot of mutations, but they are still trying to learn more about it. He explained that if the authorities thought it was a type of concern, they would continue to monitor it and give it a Greek name.
On the other hand, the Government of India on Thursday asked all the states and union territories to strictly screen and screen all international travelers coming from South Africa, Hong Kong and Botswana or coming through these countries. New variants of Kovid-19 with serious public health implications are reported in these countries. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, in a letter to the Additional Chief Secretaries or Principal Secretaries or Secretaries (Health) of all States and Union Territories, asked them to ensure that samples of passengers found infected are sent for immediate testing.
Information about the high number of mutations in the new strain
Bhushan said in the letter that it has now been informed by the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) that Botswana (3 cases), South Africa (6 cases) and Hong Kong (1 case) have the form B.1.1529 of Covid-19. Cases have come to the fore. Bhushan said, “This new strain is known to have a large number of mutations. This has serious public health implications for the country in view of the recent easing of visa restrictions and opening up of international travel.
“It is therefore imperative that all international travelers coming from these countries (including those arriving in India who are from “at-risk” countries) and transiting through these countries are required to be approved by the Ministry,” he said. Strict screening and screening of passengers from all other countries as mentioned in the Revised International Arrival Guidelines issued on 11 November 2021.
According to the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the people who came in contact with these international travelers are also to be monitored and screened. “You are also requested to ensure that the samples of infected incoming passengers are immediately sent to the specified IGSLS as per the INSACOG Guidelines document issued by this Ministry on July 15, 2021,” the letter said.
So far four variants are a matter of concern
Let us tell you that according to the WHO, only four variants of corona virus have been considered as “variant of concern”. These variants are – Alpha (B.1.1.7, so called ‘UK variant’), Beta (B.1.351, so called ‘South Africa variant’), Gamma (P.1, so called ‘Brazil variant’) and Delta (B. 1.617.2).
