Constitution Day 2021: Today the whole country is celebrating ‘Constitution Day’, know the history behind it

Constitution Day 2021: Today is a special day in the history of independent India. Constitution Day is being celebrated with great enthusiasm in the country today. We all know that today’s day i.e. 26th November is celebrated as Constitution Day. India formally adopted the Constitution through a Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, although it came into force on 26 January 1950.

It took a total of two years 11 months and 18 days to prepare the constitution in India. Our constitution gives equal rights to every citizen of the country to live in independent India. The sole purpose of celebrating Constitution Day is to promote the values of the Constitution among the youth of the country in the era of Western culture. Apart from this, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar had the most prominent role in the making of the constitution of our country, so Constitution Day is also celebrated as a symbol of paying tribute to him.

Why the need for a constitution

In fact, when the British rule was about to end from the country, then India needed such a legal book, which would maintain unity, equality among the people of all religions living in the country. This book was needed so that the country is united and all the people get all the rights without any discrimination. In view of this, the demand for making a constitution started among the freedom fighters. When the country was about to become independent, the demand for the formation of a Constituent Assembly started rising.

The first meeting of this assembly was held in the year 1946 on 9th December. 207 members were present in this meeting held in the Central Hall of Parliament House. Let us tell here that when the Constituent Assembly was formed, there were 389 members in this assembly at that time but later their number was reduced to 299. This happened because when the country was partitioned after independence, some princely states were no longer a part of this assembly and the number of members decreased.

Drafting committee formed under the leadership of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar

However, on 29 August 1947, a big decision was taken in the Constituent Assembly and the drafting committee was formed under the leadership of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. After this it was accepted on 26 November 1949 i.e. on this day and later it was implemented on 26 January 1950.
