After the death of a 15-year-old teenager in police custody in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, an angry mob attacked the police station on Friday. The BJP has called for a 12-hour bandh in Mallarpur area in this case on Saturday. The police claims that boy’s body was found hanging in the toilet of Mallarpur police station on Thursday night, while the BJP has alleged that policemen beat him up because his parents are supporters of the BJP.
However, boy’s father says that he is a Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporter and his son has committed suicide. Police said that a magistrate inquiry has been ordered in the case. After the postmortem of the teenager, the last rites were performed at Tarapith cremation ground amid tight police security.
BJP and some of boy’s neighbors claim that the police picked him up a few days ago. Superintendent of Police Shyam Singh has said that he has been detained on Thursday afternoon on charges of theft and was kept in a separate safe room at Mallarpur police station.
“He went to the toilet and got hanged at around 9.25 pm last night,” the officer said. Saumitra Khan, president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha state unit and MP from Bishnupur sat on a dharna in front of the police station and in and started demanding the officer’s resignation.
BJP workers along with some locals blocked a national highway and burnt tires in protest. Khan said, “We have called for a 12-hour shutdown in Mallarpur on Saturday. If the culprits are not punished, we will call a statewide bandh. ”
Earlier in the day, angry locals tried to attack the police station. When the policemen tried to disperse them, they threw stones at them. Boy’s father has said that his son has committed suicide and he does not want any kind of violence.
The deceased’s father told reporters, “I am a supporter of TMC. Based on the information received from various sources, we feel that my son, who was detained on charges of theft, committed suicide by hanging himself. We have not given any complaint to the police.”
